Child of the Bear

Emerson’s long poem does not mention the great sachem Papisse Conewa, Child of the Bear, whose legend as a warrior and tribal leader is as grand as both his stature and breadth of life—he banded together a great coalition of Abenaki tribes in defense of their homeland against the onslaught of European pilgrims, settlers, and armies—and still, it is said he lived to be over a hundred years old.
